In his own words

“I’ve always been
the person trying
to catch up”

Speaking to Voyage Houston in July 2024, he described a childhood where basketball was the thing he could out-work rather than out-jump: “I always had a knack for basketball, or for sports in general — just a hustle and put my all in.”

“It has not been a smooth road at all. I’ve always been the person trying to catch up to everybody. I’ve always been the person who was told you can’t do it, or you might need to find another route, or this isn’t a path for you — but the same people who said that are the same people who saw me grow and build.”

His Collabstr biography puts the same period more plainly: he was cut from his college team, and trained until he was dominating local industry leagues and had an overseas offer in hand.

I’ve always been underdog, always been a person [who] has been three steps behind, but through all the trials and tribulations I’ve always found a way to push myself to be the best that I could be.
